Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

The Oakland As were already the team to beat before making a blockbuster deal to add two starting pitchers from the Chicago Cubs. Numbers Game looks into the As giving up their top prospect in order to acquire Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. The Athletics Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija and RHP Jason Hammel. Samardzija, 29, has become a first-rate starting pitcher, even if his win totals dont make that readily apparent. In 78 starts for the Cubs over the past three years, Samardzija has a 19-33 record, but has a 3.83 ERA and 1.27 WHIP are respectable and he struck out 497 batters in 496 1/3 innings, a rate surpassed by eight qualified starters in the past three years. This season alone, Samardzija was 2-7 with a 2.83 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 103 strikeouts in 108 innings with the Cubs. While Samardzijas mid-90s fastball drives his results, hes throwing a harder slider than ever before and its been an out pitch for him. Moving to Oakland is a great opportunity for Samardzija to be a rotation anchor for a World Series contender. He had never pitched in Oakland, prior to his As debut Sunday, but Oaklands park has been pitcher-friendly for years, so that ought to keep Samardzijas numbers strong. Hell be arbitration-eligible at the end of the season, due for a good raise on his $5.345-million salary, but Samardzija is under organizational control for another season beyond 2014. Hammel is a 31-year-old who was hanging around on the free agent market until the end of January, when he settled on a one-year, $6-million deal with the Cubs. That lack of interest was justified, to some degree, by Hammels 2013 season, during which he posted a 4.97 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. This year, its been a different story, as Hammel posted a career-best 2.98 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 17 starts with the Cubs, striking out 104 in 108 2/3 innings in the process. For such a marked difference, there ought to be some tangible differences in Hammels game. His home run rate is down and hes leaving a greater percentage of base-runners on, but Hammels real improvement is that his walk rate is under 2.0 for the first time in his career. Hes reduced the percentage of curve balls and change-ups that he throws, focusing on his fastball and slider and, like Samardzija, Hammels slider has been especially devastating this season. In fact, according to Fan Graphs, Hammel has the most effective slider in baseball this season. If Hammel continues the way hes pitched this season, hell be able to cash in as a free agent in the offseason. Getting Hammel in addition to Samardzija is really a power move by the As. Instead of settling for the upgrade that Samardzija provides, they also have enough depth with Hammel that LHP Tommy Milone (3.55 ERA in 16 starts) could lose his spot in the rotation. This gives Oakland insurance for injuries to their other starters and, perhaps even better (if not outright done deliberately), prevents Hammel from going to another contending team that is looking to shore up its pitching staff. Before making this trade, the As were the top team in baseball and they just added to quality starting pitchers, both of whom are having excellent seasons, so consider this trade to be the equivalent of the As pushing their chips to the middle of the table. Theyre all in. The Cubs Get: SS Addison Russell, RHP Dan Straily, CF Billy McKinney and a player to be named later. Russell, 20, was the 11th overall pick in the 2012 Draft and, while hes missed a couple months due to a hamstring injury this season, hes shown that he has the bat to be a star in the major leagues, posting an .899 OPS in 185 games in the minors. Russell has played a total of 20 games this season, 15 since being promoted to Double-A, so he could still use time to develop, but he should be knocking on the Cubs door by next season. This presents something of an enviable problem for Chicago as one of their many great prospects is shortstop Javier Baez and they have incumbent starter Starlin Castro with the big-league club. Either some players are getting traded or there will be some position changes coming, but Russell is a great get for Chicago -- hes one of the top position player prospects in the game. 25-year-old Straily got roughed up a bit early this season (4.93 ERA in seven starts), losing his spot in the As rotation, but that was a case of surrendering too many home runs (nine in 38 1/3 IP) as his 1.25 WHIP was pretty much in line with his career average. Straily doesnt throw hard at the best of times, but he lost a couple miles per hour off all of his pitches and that can make a difference for guys with overpowering stuff. Nevertheless, a 25-year-old with a good slider who has managed a 4.11 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 41 major-league starts (with slightly better numbers on the road) is worth a look for the Cubs. The 24th pick in the 2013 Draft, McKinney is a 19-year-old centre fielder climbing his way up the minor-league ladder after coming out of Texas high school ball. Overall, the left-handed hitter has a .278 average and .769 OPS in 132 minor-league games, but is hitting .243 with a .729 OPS in 77 games at Advanced Class-A ball. Hell need a little time to develop and the Cubs have other strong outfield prospects on the way too, but add a quality bat to the organization and see where he is in a couple of years. As much as the Cubs are giving up a couple of quality starting pitchers, players that give the As an immediate shot in the arm heading into the second half of the season, they got quality assets in return. If Russell does make it as even an above-average starter at shortstop, and one of Straily or McKinney provides some kind of value, then the Cubs will eventually reap the rewards of this deal. Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

DENVER -- The last time he faced his former team, Peyton Mannings emotions and the Indianapolis Colts both got the best of him. Manning shouldnt be nearly as drained or distracted when the Colts visit Denver this weekend. Watch the game live on  TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5 and TSN GO, tonight at 7pm et/4pm pt. Jim Irsay isnt getting under his skin with talk about how disappointed he was to win just one ring with Manning. And the five-time MVP doesnt have to trouble himself with a pregame tribute -- or Robert Mathis, for that matter. "Well, I think it was different last year going back to Indianapolis," Manning said coolly. In speaking with reporters in both Denver and Indianapolis during the week, Manning didnt elaborate on what it will be like facing his old team again. Instead, he segued right into what an honour it is to play in prime time. "They dont pick bad teams to open up NBC Sunday Night Football, " Manning said. "Theyre not paying all that money to the NFL to put bad teams on." No, but they did pick two teams that are dealing with lots of drama. Injuries have turned the Colts O-line into a turnstile. Indy is without Mathis, the leagues sacks leader last year with 19 1-2, including two of Manning. Mathis was suspended for the first four games for violating the leagues performance enhancing drug policy. "Hes in my opinion the best pass rusher in the NFL, and on top of that, a great leader, great teammate, great person," Andrew Luck said. The Broncos have two prominent players serving four-game banishments: receiver Wes Welker and Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater, who combined to score 210 points last season. Prater violated the NFLs substance abuse policy by drinking alcohol in the off-season, forbidden since his 2011 DUI arrest, and Welker reportedly tested positive for amphetamine use in violation of the leagues rules forbidding performance-enhancing drugs. Welker has been the games top slot receiver for a decade and Prater was the leagues top kicker last year when he made all but one of his 26 field goal attempts, including a record-breaking 64-yarder. He also led the league by a wide margin with 81 touchbacks. Novice Brandon McManus replaces Prater and the Broncos will likely make up for Welkers absence with a healthy dose of speedy receiver Emmanuel Sanders and backup tight end Jacob Tamme, who restructured his contract Thursday, in the slot. Demaryius Thomas and Cody Latimer can also move inside, with Bubba Caldwell running sideline routes. "Of course were going to miss him," Sanders said. "Hes Wes Welker." If any team is built to weather a loss such as Welkers, however, its the Broncos. "Weve got great respect for Wes," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. "But theyve got enough weapons for Peyton." Keep an eye on these other subplots Sunday night: SNAP DECISONS: If Khaled Holmes isnt ready, A.Q. Shipley could start against Denver a week after the Colts claimed the centre off waivers from Baltimore. Holmes returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since spraining his left ankle in the preseason opener. Backup Jonotthan Harrison also practiced after missing all of last week with a right thumb injury. Left guard Jack Mewhort, promoted to starter when Donald Thomas tore his right quadriceps in training camp, has been dealing with a sore right knee. And two of the Colts most versatile backups, Xavier Nixon (knee) and Joe Reitz (ankle), also are hurt. "It does keep happening like a horror movie almost," Luck said. GETTING DEFENSIVE: After coming up one win short last season, Broncos GM John Elway spent more than $100 million on a defensive makeover that includes free agents DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib. Plus, Von Miller, Derek Wolfe, Chris Harris Jr., Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter have returned from injuries that sidelined them at the Super Bowl. "Despite all our offensive productivity and how special our offence is, this town loves our team to play great defence," said co-ordinator Jack Del Rio. "And I look forward to us bringing back some of that Orange Crush feel." Even if they create their own identity on defence, theyll always ride shotgun to Manning, suggested nose tackle Terrance Knighton. "With his resume, it really doesnt matter how good you are on defence," Knighton said. "Its always going to be about Peyton and that offence putting up NFL records on points and yards. We just want to get off the field, get a rhythm going and feed off of them." GETTING DEFENSIVE II: In Miller and Ware, the Broncos have one of the games premier pass-rushing duos. Ware was cut in a salary cap move by the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the franchise leader in sacks. Hes teaming up with Miller, whos coming off a trying year that began with a six-game drug suspension and ended with a torn ACL. Ware is also coming back from an injury-riddled season. Like Miller, he looks primed for a big year. "He doesnt look like a man that should have been cut," Colts tight end Dwayne Allen said. "... Hes playing at an incredibly high level: very active hands, very active feet, destroys tight ends." GETTING DEFENSIVE III: The Broncos are smarting over the timing of Welkers suspension, which came down Tuesday night after the Broncos had drawn up their blueprints for the Colts. "Im sure not sure they really care what I think, but sure, I would like to know maybe before we pick our roster," coach John Fox said. "Look, were disappointed in Wes and we respect the leagues ruling on suspensions. It happens to a lot of people. But I would have liked a little different kind of timing, but ... were moving on." GROUND GAMES: Both teams seek better balance on offence. Second-year bruiser Montee Ball leads a group of running backs in Denver thats never started an NFL game, and the Colts are counting on Trent Richardson to have a bounce-back year. "I think people are really going to enjoy watching him," Luck said. "I think he feels a lot more comfortable with everything." Jonny Gomes Athletics Jersey .C. -- Duke sophomore Rodney Hood is entering the NBA draft. Sonny Gray Jersey .That is precisely what they got Sunday. The Ravens trailed at halftime and never built a comfortable lead against lowly Jacksonville, yet did just enough to squeeze out a 20-12 win to stay in the thick of the AFC playoff race. http://www.athleticsauthenticshop.com/a … cs-jersey/ . To be fair, the celebrations are already anything but tame. Nerf ball tricks shots are just the tip of the iceberg for a group that has performed in zero gravity, faced pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek and an assembled team on the MTV series "Fantasy Factory", and even hit a basketball trick shot from a passing blimp. Oakland Athletics Hoodie . Trailing by a goal after 20 minutes of play, Joe Pavelski responded with three goals and an assist as the Sharks snapped a two-game losing skid with a 5-2 victory over the struggling Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. Jose Canseco Jersey .The ruling takes effect on Jan. 1 and stems from the debate surrounding Paralympic champion Markus Rehm, an amputee who won the national long jump title competing with a carbon-fiber prosthesis.PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The wind was so strong, the conditions so demanding, that Jimmy Walker felt like Saturday at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am was competing against the golf course instead of the rest of the field. Golfs hottest player wound beating them both. Walker finally made his first bogey of the tournament, and that was only a nuisance. He ran off five birdies at Monterey Peninsula for a 4-under 67, the best score of a blustery day, giving him a six-shot lead going into the final round. Walker went 187 starts on the PGA Tour without winning. He now has a chance to win for the third time in his last eight tournaments. He won the Frys.com Open last fall about an hour away at CordeValle. He won for the second time this season last month in Honolulu. In both those tournaments, Walker was trailing going into the last day. This time, he has the largest 54-hole lead at Pebble Beach since Phil Mickelson led by seven in 2005. Mickelson went on to win by four shots. "Ive never had whatever big lead this is going into the last round," Walker said. "Just go out and hit good shots and play good golf and see what happens." He was at 13-under 202. Tim Wilkinson of New Zealand had a 69 and Hunter Mahan had a 72, both at Monterey Peninsula. They were at 208. Havoc happened on Saturday on all three courses, particularly at Pebble Beach. The third round was not completed because of a delay lasting 2 hours, 19 minutes due to gusts at 30 mph that made golf balls roll off the green, mostly at Pebble Beach. In a three-course rotation, play has to be stopped at all three courses. The average score at Pebble Beach was just over 75. Jordan Spieth caught the brunt of it. Tied with Walker going into the third round, Spieth was 5-over through 15 holes when the round was halted by darkness. That included a pair of three-putts on the front nine when he went out in 40, and another three-putt from 18 feet. Spieth missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, and then chose to mark the 5-foot par putt he had coming back. Walker opened with a 66 at Pebble Beach when it was calm, the best time to play it. That doesnt mean he was off the hook on the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula. He just had to play his best, and he did. On the par-3 ninth, typically a 6-iron, Walker smashed a 5-wood into the wind and couldnt reach the green. He made one birdie with an 8-iron from 140 yards, and was hitting 4-iron that went only about 165 yards. "It just feels like a battle," Walker said.dddddddddddd"Youre not battling really anybody else. Youre not battling the field or a tournament. Youre just out there trying. The golf course is trying to beat you up." Richard Lee had a 72 at Spyglass Hill and was alone in fourth at 209. Phil Mickelson had a 71 at Spyglass and was among those eight shots behind. Only three players broke par at Pebble -- none better than Dustin Johnsons 70. Brendon Todd looked as if he might have one of those rounds until bogeys on the last two holes. "Nine and 10 are par 5s today. I couldnt reach either one," Todd said. "There were no birdie holes out there." Play was stopped about an hour after the last group teed off. It was a peculiar sight to see clouds gathering on the Pacific horizon, and officials trying to spray water on the greens to help balls stay on the putting surface. It didnt work. And when play resumed, Brian Gay was given relief on the fourth green at Pebble Beach because of standing water left from hosing down the greens. He was able to move his ball some 15 feet to the other side of the green. But the big trouble was the wind. Kevin Chappells approach to the par-3 fifth sailed over the cliff, and he ambled down toward the beach to play the shot. The par-5 sixth at Pebble, usually reachable with a long iron, was a true three-shot hole. On the 109-yard, downhill seventh hole into the wind, the club of choice was a chip 8-iron. It was most difficult with the putting -- being able to stand over the ball, trying to hit it as it wobbled and judging the speed. Geoff Ogilvy three-putted from 3 feet twice in a three-hole stretch on his way to an 81. Spieth had a pair of three-putts that sent him tumbling out of contention. The worst was on the ninth, when he gunned his 12-footer for par about 4 feet by the hole, sent the next one 5 feet by on the other side and raised his arms in mock triumph when he made the third one. D.A. Points might have had the best time. His score didnt count. Points was disqualified Friday for using a sponge ball as a training device while waiting on the 18th tee. He returned Saturday to contribute to the pro-am side of the competition with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The team shot 77 and missed the cut. "It meant an enormous amount to me," Rice said. "He didnt have to do that. It speaks really well for him and for the tour that he came out played, anyway." Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

DENVER - Nathan MacKinnon finally found his shooting touch on a night when his goalie turned back everything.Just what the frustrated MacKinnon needed. Same goes for Semyon Varlamov, a hard-luck loser in his last few starts.MacKinnon scored his first two goals of the season, and Varlamov stopped 40 shots for his 14th NHL shutout, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-0 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday. The 19-year-old MacKinnon has struggled to get on track this season. He scored both of his goals in the second period, one on a power play — hopping up and down on his skates to celebrate — and the other when he tipped a shot past goalie Chad Johnson.I figured (a goal) would come sooner or later, said MacKinnon, the reigning NHL rookie of the year. Obviously, a little later than I wanted, but its all in the past now.Varlamov was sharp against the Islanders, one of the leagues highest scoring teams. It was his first shutout since April 5 at St. Louis. The Russian showed no signs of fatigue after making 49 saves in a shootout loss to San Jose two nights earlier. He has stopped 89 shots in his last two games.Hes one of the best, if not the best, in the game right now, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said.No argument from Islanders coach Jack Capuano.Pretty good to me, Capuano said. Give him credit. This was a big boost for Varlamovs psyche, especially after a rough start early in the season and then missing time because of a groin injury.Right now, its very important for me to get my confidence back, Varlamov said. We scored a lot of goals, too. We get our confidence back for our offence.Cody McLeod and Marc-Andre Cliche also netted their first goals of the season. Erik Johnson added another in the third period. The Avalanche took command with a three-goal second period, turning the game into a rout. That is a departure for these teams in Denver, where the last seven meetings had been decided by one goal.Tempers flared late, with New Yorks Cal Clutterbuck and McLeod shoving each other near the Avalanche bench. Both were sent to the penalty box for roughing. Seconds later, Johnson scored on a power play to make it 5-0. The defenceman also added an assist. The Islanders struggled on the power play, going 0-for-6.Couldnt capitalize, Capuano said. Weve got to score goals. In this league, every night, got to score two to three to win. If you dont, youre not going to win hockey games. At the morning skate, MacKinnon said his scoring slump wasnt weighing on him and that he wouldnt change anything about his play.Ill get a bounce one of these nights, MacKinnon said.He did. There was a collision in front of the Islanders net with three players falling on top of Gabriel Landeskog near the crease. Johnson tried to stand tall, but fell. MacKinnon skated backward with the puck to create some separation and then lined a shot into the upper corner. His eyes grew wide when the puck went in, and he raised his arms. He then hopped around as his teammates engulfed him.Later, Jarome Iginla corralled a puck on the side and sent a pass that MacKinnon tipped to the right of Johnsons stick.MacKinnon had 24 goals and 39 assists last season in helping the Avalanche return to the playoffs. His slow start mirrored that of last season, though, when he had one goal through the opening 11 games.McLeod scored 2:34 into the game on a feed from Matt Duchene, who was left alone behind the net.Islanders captain John Tavares almost tied it, but his shot just before the buzzer to end the first clanged off the crossbar.Got to find a way to get a little bit more gritty, Tavares said. Find a way to get an ugly one, get a bounce to go your way. Its obviously a frustrating loss.NOTES: New York D Travis Hamonic missed his fourth straight game because of an upper-body injury. ... Islanders RW Kyle Okposo played in his 400th career game. ... The Islanders next stop on their five-game trip is Saturday at San Jose. ... F Maxime Talbot and Duchene each had two assists. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon thinks Kendrys Morales brings a certain presence to the lineup, even if he hasnt hit many home runs this season. Morales launched two of Seattles four homers in a 7-5 win over Texas on Friday night, handing the Rangers their seventh straight loss only hours after manager Ron Washington resigned unexpectedly. "A lot of times its not all black and white when it comes to what a guy does in a lineup, and he stretches out our lineup quite a bit," McClendon said of Morales, who came in hitting .224 with four homers. "He brings respectability to our lineup. Tonight was a big night for him." The Mariners, who are in a tight race with Oakland and Detroit atop the AL wild-card standings, won their fourth straight after losing five of their previous seven games. Interim Texas manager Tim Bogar took the familiar seat along the railing of the home dugout long occupied by Washington, who said in a statement that he was stepping down to devote all his time to an "off-the-field personal matter." The Rangers wouldnt elaborate. Washington walked away before the end of his eighth season a day after the Rangers became the first team in the majors mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Only three years ago, Washington took Texas to consecutive World Series. It was the debut as a big league manager for Bogar, who was in his first season as Washingtons bench coach. He was a minor league manager for five seasons. "I dont think fans here in this area have seen anybody in that seat for eight years," Bogar said. "And Ive got to do it after an icon, so its a little bittersweet." Morales went deep to right field against Scott Baker (3-4) to put the Mariners ahead 2-0 in the second inning. His sixth homer of the season was another two-run shot in the sixth. "I havent gotten there as fast as I would have liked, but hopefully today is the start of something better," Morales said through a translator. Mike Zunino became the first Seattle catcher with 20 homers, breaking Miguel Olivos club record of 19 set in 2011. Brad Miller hit his 10th. Hisashi Iwakuma (14-6) matched Felix Hernandez for the team lead in wins. Iwakuma won his fifth decision in a row, allowing three runs with five strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings. Fernando Rodney gave up a run in the ninth but finished for his 42nd save in 45 chances. The Rangers loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth against the Japanese right-hander, who got Elvis Andrus on a double-play grounder that scored a run and escaped the inning with another groundout to second from Tomas Telis. HEADS UP Iwakuma ended up catching a line drive from Ryan Rua in a purely defensive move with the ball headed for his face in the second inning. Iwakuma turned his head just as the ball reached his glove, with a wide-eyed look of relief. The scare came a batter after Adrian Beltre hit a sharp one-hopper that glanced off Iwakumas glove to second baseman Robinson Cano, who threw out Beltre at first. "Just reaction," Iwakuma said. "I didnt even know the ball was in the glove." TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: RF Endy Chavez left in the fifth inning after getting cut above his left eye sliding headfirst into second base on a successful steal. His helmet appeared to cause the cut when it came off just as his head collided with the left knee of Texas SS Luis Sardinas. Chavez, who got three stitches, was not diagnosed with a concussion and was expected to be available Saturday. Rangers: RF Alex Rios has an infection associated with the bruise on his right thumb and will be out at least a week. ... There was no update from team doctors on the latest exam of Yu Darvishs right elbow. UP NEXT Mariners RHP Chris Young, a Dallas native who had his major league debut with the Rangers nine years ago, makes his second start of the season in Texas home park. Hes coming off the shortest start of his career after allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning in a 6-1 loss to Oakland. Rangers RHP Nick Martinez faces Seattle for the second time in three starts. He gave up five runs with four walks and no strikeouts in five innings of a 5-0 loss on Aug. 26. MELBOURNE, Australia -- Milos Raonic began his Australian Open with a 7-6 (2), 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 defeat of Spains Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Tuesday to reach the second round in sweltering temperatures. Raonic, the 11th seed from Thornhill, Ont., was tested for nearly two and a half hours in the demanding heat that hovered just above 40 C. The heat was even too much for one of the ball kids, who had to leave the court in the middle of the match. Raonic finally put away the victory on his fifth match point against an opponent ranked 77th in a first-time meeting. "The heat was not a problem, but I struggled with a gusting wind, it was moving all around," said Raonic. "I also struggled to get back after losing my serve twice in the first set. I was very disappointed with that. "But I feel Im doing a lot of stuff better on returns, I can give myself opportunities this way." Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic felt the heat as he was treated on court trailing 4-2 in the second set before eventually going down to Frances Benoit Paire 7-6 (14-12), 6-3, 6-4. Dancevic said he started feeling faint and was stretched out on court with a doctor, trainers and ambulance personnel in attendance. But the Niagara Falls, Ont., native recovered and soldiered on, wisely donning a white cap and finishing the match. "I went to black for a while," said Dancevic. "But it may have seemed longer to me than it was. It was really hot, I dont think we should be playing tennis in this kind of heat." Raonic took the victory with 21 aces, striking 48 winners and breaking on 7-of-20 chances. The 23-year-old was frustrated as he tried to close out the contest but finally got the job done when he broke the Spaniards serve. Hell join compatriots Eugenie Bouchard, from Montreal, and Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil, who won their first-round matches on Monday. "The Canadians are putting themselves into good position: Frank (Dancevic) did good going through qualies, Vesek is playing well from the start of the season and Genie has been playing well also," said Raonic. Raonic will next take on Romanian Victor Hanescu, who defeated Polands Peter Gojowczyk 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-3. Raonic has a 1-1 record in the series, losing their first match in a Toronto first round. "My coach (Ivan Ljubicic, who stands 5-1 in that series) has played him a few times," said Raonic. "I know Victors game, I know what to expect. "There wont be any big changes." Raonic and Gimeno-Traver struggled to adjust to the conditions in the 46-minute opening set. Raonic emerged 4-4 after three consecutive breaks of serve before finally getting an edge on Gimeno-Traver. As the set wound into the tiebreaker Raonic took command, leading 5-1 on his way to setting up four set points and converting the first with an ace. Raonic, who reached the fourth round in Melbourne in 2011 and 2013, swept the second set 6-1, but was caught out in the third as Gimeno-Traver got on the scoreboard. But Raonic re-asserted himself in the fourth, earning a 5-2 lead and reaching his first three set points. Forehand errors spoiled the quick winning scenario, with Raonic forced to finally go through on his fifth try as Gimeno-Traver sent a backhand return wide down the line. Pavel Datsyuk Red Wings Jersey .Y. -- As if the worst start in franchise history isnt bad enough, Buffalo Sabres President Ted Black braced his teams win-starved fans for potentially more tough times.(SportsNetwork.com) - The two best teams in the regular season and two teams that never felt they were getting enough respect. Theres a fascinating pair of FCS semifinals on tap next weekend following a wild weekend of quarterfinals in which all eight teams scored over 30 points. In one semifinal, Sam Houston State at North Dakota State will match the competitors from the 2011 and 12 national championship games, both won by NDSU. Many people consider the three-time defending champion Bison to be the best team in the playoffs despite having the No. 2 seed. Sam Houston, though, wasnt on a lot of peoples minds considering the Southland Conference co-champion was 1-3 to start the season. Top-seeded New Hampshire from CAA Football is in the semifinals for the second consecutive season and will host Illinois State as both teams seek a championship berth for the first time. Illinois State will be a tough out considering the Redbirds shared the Missouri Valley Conference title with NDSU, though they always seemed to live in their shadow in the regular season. After the semifinals, there will be a three-week break until the FCS championship game on Jan. 10 in Frisco, Texas. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam Houston State (11-4) 34, No. 6 seed Villanova (11-3) 31 Villanova, PA - They have the same Sam Houston State players who opened the season by losing three of their first four games. But realistically, the Bearkats are a much different team today. They are headed back to the FCS semifinals for the third time in four seasons after beating sixth-seeded Villanova, 34-31, in the quarterfinals Saturday while the Wildcats played without star quarterback John Robertson because of symptoms from a concussion. Unseeded Sam Houston State (11-4), which has won three playoff games, will play at second-seeded North Dakota State (13-1) in the semifinals next weekend. The Bearkats lost to the Bison in both the 2011 and 12 national championship games. Sam Houston has few key players from those recent powers and even a first-year coach in K.C. Keeler, but the Bearkats has put it all together at the right time of the season. That was a well-played football game by two pretty good teams, said Keeler, who coached against Villanova for 11 seasons in CAA Football from 2002-12 at Delaware. It is great to get the win and great to be in the final four. I dont care who or where we play because it will be exciting no matter what. The Bearkats had prepared to face Robertson in the teams first-ever meeting, but that changed Saturday after he awoke with a headache from the concussion he suffered in last weekends playoff win over Liberty. Robertson, a redshirt junior who was the CAA Football offensive player of the year, went through concussion protocols during the week and was cleared to play against Sam Houston State, but he was scratched by the teams medical staff following an examination Saturday morning. Jalen Overstreets 1-yard touchdown run with 4:03 left to play gave Sam Houston its 34-31 lead. Villanova (11-3), behind Robertsons replacement, senior Chris Polony, moved the ball down to the Bearkats 29, but drew an ill-timed delay- of-game penalty while setting up for a potential, game-tying 46-yard field goal attempt. That made it a 51-yard attempt for Chris Gough and he missed wide to the left with 32 seconds left. Polony played well in relief of Robertson. He completed 13-of-24 pass attempts for 228 yards and one touchdown, and carried the 13 times for 87 yards and two touchdown. Very Robertson-esque, in fact. Sam Houston seems so different because it has jelled with a team that has eight FBS transfers and 18 starters who didnt start in Keelers first spring game. New quarterback Jared Johnson, last years backup behind four-year starter Brian Bell, was 22-for-27 for 303 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Leading 17-16 at halftime, Sam Houston scored on the first play of the third quarter when Johnson threw a 66-yard bomb to LaDarius Brown for their second touchdown connection. But Villanova tailback Kevin Monangai (27 carries, 166 yards) scored on a 58- yard run with 9:36 left in the third quarter and Kevin Gulyas caught the two- point conversation from Polony to tie the game 24-24. Luc Swimberghes 30-yard field goal with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter put Sam Houston back in front, 27-24. But Villanova answered with a nine-play, 67-yard drive, which was capped by Polony rolling out from a shotgun for a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 31-27 Wildcats with 7:15 left. Sam Houston had an answer as well, moving 75 yards in 10 plays and going ahead 34-31 on Overstreets 1-yrd run up the middle at the 4:03 mark. Polony had originally beaten out Robertson for the No. 1 job in 2012, but Robertson had made 35 straight starts for the Wildcats before Saturdays game. Polony accounted for two touchdowns in the first quarter. He connected with wide receiver Poppy Livers for a 54-yard touchdown pass to pull Villanova within 7-6 before the extra point was missed. He later scored on a 36-yard keeper to give the Wildcats a 13-7 lead. But Sam Houston answered that score with a 12-play, 80-yard drive, moving back ahead 14-13 after Johnsons second touchdown pass, a 4-yarder to Gerald Thomas with 9:54 remaining in the second quarter. Swimberghe extended Sam Houstons lead with a 32-yard field goal, but Gough, who missed the earlier extra point, closed the half with a 46-yard field goal to pull the Wildcats within 17-16. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- No. 5 seed Illinois State (12-1) 59, No. 4 seed Eastern Washington (11-3) 39 Cheney, WA - As usual Saturday, red ruled at Eastern Washingtons Roof Field, home of the red Inferno turf. This time, however, it was the Illinois State Redbirds, not host Eastern Washington, that kept changing the scoreboard the most as the fifth-seeded visitors stunned the fourth-seeded Eagles, 59-46, in the FCS quarterfinals. Illinois State (12-1) will next play on the other side of the country, going to top-seeded New Hampshire (12-1) for the semifinals next weekend. Sophomore Marshaun Coprich rushed for 258 yards and four touchdowns and the Redbirds kept Eastern Washington star Vernon Adams Jr. in check for the first three quarters while they prevented the Eagles (11-3) from reaching the national semifinals for a fourth time in five seasons. Two of Coprichs scores came in the third quarter when Illinois State extended a 24-17 halftime lead to 45-20. In the decisive third quarter, Coprich rushed for a 21-yard touchdown on the Redbirds first possession to give them a 31-17 lead. After Tyler McNannay kicked a 36-yard field goal to close Eastern Washingtons deficit to 11 points, Coprich capped Illinois States next drive with a 2-yard touchdown run at the 4:24 mark, making it 38-20. Alex Donnelly then intercepted Adams deep in Eagles territory, which set up a short 23-yard touchdown drive capped by quarterback Tre Robersons 5-yard TD run with nine seconds left to make it 45-20. Adams 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter pulled Eastern Washington within 45-27, but Robersons 31-yard touchdown pass to Lechein Neblett extended the Redbirds lead to 52-27. Adams sandwiched a pair of touchdown passes to Cooper Kupp (10 receptions, 185 yards) around a successful onside kick and Eastern Washington closed with two touchdowns, but Coprichs 74-yard touchdown burst made it 59-39 and gave the Redbirds a touchdown on their first five possessions of the second half. Coprich, the Missouri Valley Conference offensive player of the year, has rushed for over 100 yards in all 13 Illinois State games this season. Adams added a third touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Shaq Hill, finishing 25-for-44 for 425 yards with two interceptions. For three quarters, he was outperformed by Roberson, who 19-for-24 for 206 yards and two touchdowns with 62 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The two teams combined for 1,065 yards. The game was delayed with 1:40 remaining while a fan in the stands, said to be the parent of an Eastern Washington, went into cardiac arrest before being attended to and then taken to an area hospital. Illinois State scored on its first four possessions to take a 24-10 lead midway through the second quarter. After Nick Aussieker opened the scoring with a field goal, Coprich scored on a touchdown run set up by a Mike Banks fumble recovery, Brady Tibbits added a scoring run and Roberson passed for a touchdown to CCameron Meredith.dddddddddddd. But Eastern Washington gained late momentum by pulling within 24-17 on Jabari Wilsons 1-yard TD run with just 36 seconds remaining in the first half. Quincy Forte had scored on a 9-yard run and McNannay kicked a field goal for the Eagles earlier in the half. Illinois States last trip to the playoffs in 2012 ended on the red turf with a 51-35 loss to Eastern Washington. This time, the host Eagles were left seeing red. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- No. 1 seed North Dakota State (13-1) 39, No. 7 seed Coastal Carolina (12-2) 32 Fargo, ND - North Dakota State trailing in the fourth quarter has been a rarity during its three-year reign as the FCS champion, but the Bison have come from behind to win two consecutive playoff games in eight days. Indeed, they continue to have the collective heart of a champion even as teams get closer in the rear-view mirror. Running back John Crockett rushed for a school playoff-record 227 yards and two touchdowns and became the Bisons new single-season rushing leader while second-seeded North Dakota State held off seventh-seeded Coastal Carolina, 39-32, Saturday for the second consecutive year in the national quarterfinals. The game was far different from North Dakota States 48-14 playoff rout of Coastal last season, but the Bison (13-1) will host Sam Houston State (11-4) in the national semifinals next weekend. The Bison defeated Sam Houston in both the 2011 and 12 national championship games. A week ago, the Bison rallied past Missouri Valley Conference rival South Dakota State in the final minute of their second-round game. On Saturday, they fell behind for the first time, 32-31, on Coastal running back DeAngelo Hendersons 2-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter. The Chanticleers, however, failed on a two-point attempt after a second straight score, keeping their lead at one point. North Dakota State then retook the lead two possessions later when Crockett found running room along the Coastal sideline and scored on a 45-yard dash with 9:28 remaining to play. Quarterback Carson Wentz ran up the middle to score a two-point conversion and lift the Bison advantage to 39-32. On Coastals next drive, the Chanticleers converted a fake punt just inside their territory, but didnt gain another first down on the drive. After NDSUs Adam Keller missed a 49-yard field goal that could have put the win away, Bison safety Colten Heagle (team-high 12 tackles) stymied the Chants final drive with an interception of Alex Ross just inside Bison territory with 53 seconds remaining. Crockett, whos gained three 1,000-yard seasons, has 1,754 this season on a school-record 320 carries, including 26 on Saturday. Hes scored 17 of his 18 touchdowns on the ground. Wentz accounted for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in the win. But Big South co-champion Coastal Carolina (12-2) was nearly up to the challenge, scoring the most points against NDSU during the Bisons playoff win streak. Henderson had 143 rushing yards and the touchdown, Ross rushed for two touchdowns and All-American Quinn Backus finished with eight tackles to end his illustrious career with 441 stops, 14th on the FCS all-time list. North Dakota State, which had won 22 straight home games and 14 consecutive playoff games, had hoped to assert itself in the second half after clinging to a 24-20 halftime advantage. After Coastals offense went three-and-out to begin the third quarter, the Bison completed a nine-play, 69-yard drive with Wentzs 2-yard scoring run around right end providing a 31-20 lead. But Ross capped the Chanticleers following possession by diving into the North Dakota State for a 4-yard touchdown and they pulled within 31-26 at the 3:29 mark. Hendersons go-ahead touchdown capped a quick-strike, four-play drive which went 95 yards when Ross had a 48-yard pass to John Israel, Henderson a 32-yard run and Ross a 13-yard pass to Osharmar Abercrombie. The first half featured offensive firepower as North Dakota State took a 24-20 lead at halftime. Crockett opened the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown and Wentz fired touchdowns to Kevin Vaadeland and Luke Albers. But Coastal moved the chains and Devin Brown returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter, tying the game at 17-17. Alex Catrons 25-yard field goal on the final play of the half pulled Coastal within 24-20. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, Dec. 12 No. 1 seed New Hampshire (12-1) 35, No. 8 seed Chattanooga (10-4) 30 Durham, NH - All-American wide receiver R.J. Harris is noted as being New Hampshires hardest worker. No doubt hes the Wildcats best player. Harris caught two touchdowns, including on a 61-yard screen pass in the fourth quarter that helped put away top-seeded New Hampshires 35-30 victory over eighth-seeded Chattanooga in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs Friday night. The win gives the Wildcats (12-1) a semifinal-round date at home next weekend against either fourth-seeded Eastern Washington or fifth-seeded Illinois State, who face each other in another quarterfinal on Saturday. New Hampshire, making its 11th straight playoff appearance under coach Sean McDonnell, has captured 12 straight wins and 14 straight home games, both program records. Harris decisive second touchdown was electrifying. New Hampshire clung to a 28-24 lead in a back-and-forth game when it took possession of the ball at its 39 following a Chattanooga punt early in the fourth quarter. On first down, Harris went in motion and took a handoff from quarterback Sean Goldrich. Harris lateraled the ball to fellow wide receiver Jimmy Giansante, who then flipped it back to Goldrich. The senior signal caller lofted a screen pass to Harris in the backfield at the 30, who immediately picked up blocks and blew past Chattanooga defenders along the sideline to give the Wildcats the games first double-digit lead, 35-24, with 11:04 remaining to play. Nick Cefalo then intercepted Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman on the Mocs ensuing drive and New Hampshire begin milking game clock from there. Huesman had dominated the first half before the Wildcats had defensive answers after halftime. But on Chattanoogas next possession, running back Derraine Craine scored on an 8-yard pass from Huesman with 1:32 left to pull the Mocs with 35-30. With no remaining timeouts, the Mocs needed to recover the ensuing onside kick, but New Hampshires Keith Parkinson did. The Wildcats ran out the clock from there and advanced to the national semifinals for the second consecutive season. Last year, they were eliminated at eventual national champion North Dakota State one step shy of the national championship game. Harris finished with seven receptions for 172 yards. Until his second touchdown, the first-ever meeting between the two conference champions - New Hampshire in CAA Football and Chattanooga in the Southern Conference - was extremely tight. Huesman had 428 total yards and accounted for three touchdowns in Chattanoogas loss, which ended a seven-game losing streak. Goldrich threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score for New Hampshire. The Wildcats went ahead for good 28-24 on Nico Steritis 6-yard draw with 13:23 left in the fourth quarter. But the play nearly didnt happen. Chattanooga defensive back Trevor Knight intercepted Goldrich in the Mocs end zone. But video replay confirmed Knight didnt re-establish himself in the end zone before catching the ball. On the next play, Steriti scored his second touchdown of the game to erase a 24-22 New Hampshire deficit. An attempt for a two-point conversion failed, however. Trailing 22-21 after three quarters, Chattanooga (10-4) went ahead when Henrique Ribeiro kicked a 27-yard field goal on the second play of the fourth quarter. The kick stopped a string of four straight missed field goal attempts by Ribeiro during the playoffs. New Hampshire had kept seven of its previous opponents to under 20 points, but Chattanooga took a 21-15 lead into halftime after Huesman scored from 1 yard out with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter. It completed a huge first half in which he was 15-for-17 for 167 yards and rushed for another 64 yards and two touchdowns. His second touchdown erased a 15-14 Mocs deficit. Goldrich threw a 49-yard scoring pass to Harris with 4:47 left and then holder Andy Vailas ran in a faked extra point for the two-point conversion. Mike Santorelli recorded Torontos only goal 2:19 into the frame when he batted inn James van Riemsdyks cross-ice pass into the back of the net.dddddddddddd Galiardi scored 1:10 later when Byfuglien created a turnover in front of Torontos net, and Halischuk added one off a deflection at the 5:59 mark. Byfuglien made it a two-goal game on a one-timer of a Blake Wheeler pass at the midway point of the second. Little put one in during a power play 3:37 into the third, and Chiarot, playing in his 14th career game, netted his first goal off a faceoff to cap the rout. Game Notes Hutchinson improved to 10-3-2 this season ... Winnipeg has won five straight meetings ... Jets forward Andrew Ladd recorded two assists ... Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

WASHINGTON -- The NHL wanted to provide plenty of Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin by moving the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals into the same division. The league couldnt separate them again fast enough for the Capitals given the Penguins recent domination. Pittsburgh beat Washington 4-0 on Wednesday night at Verizon Center, the fifth straight victory in the series, to maintain first place in the Metropolitan Division. Barring a sudden and unexpected change of structure, the Capitals would love to start finding answers as to why the Penguins have their number. "Based off tonight we know we have some work to do in order to rebound our next game against them," Washington goaltender Braden Holtby said. "We feel we have the players in here that are capable of beating them. Its just a matter of putting together a 60-minute game where were all on the same page and doing things we need to do to win." Instead, the Penguins did just about everything necessary to blow Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals out of their own building. They jumped out to a strong start, got two points apiece from Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and a shutout from lightly tested goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who made 18 saves. "I think this was as complete a game as we played," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "We came out and pushed the pace, the speed of the game. ... The second half of the game was a team effort: how we played the game, managed the puck and shut them down." Bylsma used the word "smothering" to describe his teams all-around defensive effort. The Penguins outshot the Capitals 40-18 overall and perhaps more importantly 34-10 at even strength. Washington at one point had a 9:22 shot drought and midway through the game put more pucks on net short-handed than five-on-five. Thats not typically a path to success, and Capitals coach Adam Oates blamed an overall lack of execution. "Obviously you have to give them some credit, they played a very good hockey game," Oates said. "We got behind early and (its a) tough team to catch up (against), and they didnt give us anything." Getting ahead and clamping down was something the Penguins took a great deal of pride in. Crosby, who passed St. Louis Blues forward Alex Steen to take sole possession of the NHL points lead with a power-play goal and an assist, pointed to the strong start as something that set the tone for the whole night. That Pittsburgh (14-8-0) started well was not a surprise, but they had something tangible to show for it when defenceman Paul Martin beat Holtby with a seemingly-harmless shot from the blue-line just 6:38 into the game. Rookie Beau Bennett made it 2-0 a few minutes later, and the Penguins went into the first intermission with a 17-6 shot advantage despite the Capitals spending over four minutes on the power play. "I dont know if we expect to hop out to that kind of shot advantage, but certainly the pace and how we played was excellent," Bylsma said. "We got some real good scoring opportunities." The Capitals got some of their own in what Crosby called a "50/50" second period. The teams traded chances back and forth, like when Fleury stopped a driving Ovechkin and Holtby, who finished with 36 saves, denied Crosby from point-blank range soon after. But when Washington couldnt break through, the Penguins made the best of a late second-period power play. Malkin controlled the puck along the boards before setting into motion quick passes from Chris Kunitz to James Neal to Crosby, who scored from an almost-impossible angle at the side of the net. "Its high execution, its great movement, set up there to start by Geno," Bylsma said. "Its a sharp, sharp angle, but its an awesome power-play goal." By the time Neal made it 4-0 in the third period, the Penguins were well on their way to locking things down and building a three-point lead atop the Metropolitan Division. It was the kind of loss the Capitals want to just throw out after winning seven of 10 going into Wednesday night. "That was a pretty ugly game, and it might just be one of those ones that we need to forget," defenceman Karl Alzner said. "The only reason wed watch (the tape) maybe is to look and see how bad we were." Plenty was built into this game, with first place on the line. It was the first time the Penguins and Capitals were facing each other as division rivals since 1993. Fleury, who recorded his 25th career shutout and second this season, took more joy in holding on to first than beating the Capitals. "Its always a good rivalry with them, but the thing we have to focus on is the win," he said. During their five-game winning streak against Washington, the Penguins have scored 21 goals to the Capitals nine. Theyve also won the past five games Crosby has played in dating to 2011. Worried about now, Oates was less concerned about the standings than about what the loss felt like. "Its more of a measuring stick," he said. "Youre playing against your rival, its a big game and thats part of being a pro. Hopefully it deflates you right because you know its a deflating feeling in there right now." NOTES -- Malkins career-worst goal drought reached 15 games, but he finished with two assists to make it 19 on the season. ... Washington defenceman Mike Green missed his third straight game with a lower-body injury. He could return Friday when the Capitals host the Montreal Canadiens. ... The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed non-import safety Dan West on Friday as well as import wide receiver Antonio Robinson. West has played in 27 games over the last two seasons with the Bombers, recording two defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles. He was originally signed as a free agent in May of 2012. Robinson played his college football at Nicholls State, where he finished his career there with 47 receptions for 992 yards and 10 TDs, while rushing 24 times for 249 yards, two majors. He also returned 28 kickoffs in 2009 for 549 yards. In 20 career games there, he finished with 1,790 all-purpose yards. He spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Green Bay Packers on their practice squad, then joined the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League in 2012, and the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League in 2013. PAUL, Minn. - Thomas Vanek had Minnesota high on his list from the start. Hes not the first NHL free agent to do so, and the way the Wild have been progressing he probably wont be the last. Vanek agreed Tuesday to a three-year, $19.5 million contract, giving an improving lineup a potentially prolific scorer and allowing the Austrian-born left wing to settle in an area he has made his home since college. Two summers ago, the Wild turned heads by landing left wing Zach Parise and defenceman Ryan Suter. Now theyve added another top-market free agent in Vanek, whose 277 goals are the eighth-most in the NHL since his debut nine years ago. "What intrigued me the most was obviously with Zach signing here and Suter signing here, this team is getting really good and is very good," Vanek said, adding: "Im extremely thrilled to be a part of the Wild and of a group like this." According to a person with knowledge of the contract who spoke to on condition of anonymity because the team did not announce the value, Vanek will make $5.5 million this season, $6.5 million in 2014-15 and $7.5 million in 2015-16. Vanek lives with his family in Stillwater, an idyllic riverfront suburb a few miles from Xcel Energy Center. He played two seasons at the University of Minnesota before turning pro with Buffalo and called winning the national championship with the Gophers the "best thing" hes done in his hockey career. "To be a part of the Wild now and go after the big prize and having a chance to do it in Minnesota is beyond my wildest dreams," Vanek said. Vanek was the fifth overall pick by the Sabres in 2003. He had two 40-goal seasons for them, but last fall he was traded to the New York Islanders, who later dealt him to Montreal. He totalled 27 goals over 78 games with the three teams. In the playoffs with the Canadiens, he had five goals and five assists in 17 games. Vaneks production slipped at times this season, and he was even benched briefly during the post-season, but the Wild werent deterred. "It certainly wasnt my best one I can tell you that. But Ill take the blame for that," Vanek said. "Its not always easy moving around and being away from my family." Vanek will play on either the first or secondd line, with some combination of Parise, Jason Pominville, Charlie Coyle, Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund likely filling the other top five forward spots.dddddddddddd Vaneks 113 power-play goals since his 2005-06 rookie season are the third-most in the NHL in that span. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Vanek has the type of finishing ability around the net the Wild have lacked. "Theres no question that we do have some skill, but we dont score goals easily," coach Mike Yeo said. Vanek turned down seven-year offers, including from the Islanders. When Pominville was traded to the Wild last year, Vanek was the one who encouraged his long-time Sabres teammate. "He loved Buffalo a lot, which I did too," Vanek said. "But I told him, Youll like it there. Theres a lot of good fans. And after a week or so, he called me and said, You know what? Youre right. I do like it here a lot." Unlike in the other major pro sports, Minnesota can be a destination market in the NHL because of its hockey roots. The addition of Parise and Suter and the Wilds advancement to the Western Conference semifinals this spring were further steps toward NHL prominence. "People recognize the talent that you have. So were getting better. Were in a good place," general manager Chuck Fletcher said. Defenceman Clayton Stoner (Anaheim), left wing Matt Moulson (Buffalo) and centre Cody McCormick (Buffalo) departed the Wild as unrestricted free agents. Others in that category not expected back are left wing Dany Heatley and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Defenceman Nate Prosser could return for the right price. The Wild also signed defenceman Stu Bickel (one year) and centre Brett Sutter (two years) to two-way contracts, adding depth with players wholl likely bounce between AHL affiliate Iowa and the parent club. The 27-year-old Sutter, the son of Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter, has played in 54 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. Bickel, a native of Chanhassen who played one season for the Gophers, played in 67 games for the New York Rangers over a two-year span. He spent last season in the AHL. ___ AP Sports Writer John Wawrow in Buffalo, New York, contributed to this report. Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

BERLIN -- Hamburger SV ended its seven-game losing streak in the Bundesliga by beating Borussia Dortmund 3-0 on new coach Mirko Slomkas debut on Saturday. Pierre Michel Lasogga set up Petr Jiraceks 42nd-minute headed opener and scored in the 58th. Hakan Calhanoglu completed the win with an improbable 45-meter free kick in injury time. Slomka took over last Monday from Bert van Marwijk, who was fired after the side lost its previous eight games in all competitions. "The result is a bit flattering," Slomka said. "But we did well in defence over long periods and the team can be proud of these points. Today was one of 13 (remaining) games and well never stop working." Hamburg climbed one spot into the relegation playoff place, overtaking Freiburg, which lost 4-2 at home to Augsburg. Sandro Wagner scored late for Hertha Berlin to win 2-1 at Stuttgart, which has lost seven in succession. Hoffenheim came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Borussia Moenchengladbach, and 10-man Nuremberg beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 in a game that featured three missed penalties. Second-place Bayer Leverkusens alarming slump continued in the late game with a 3-1 defeat at Wolfsburg, which stretched its winning run to four games. Bas Dost got the home side off the mark in the 13th, before Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam equalized just before the break. Luiz Gustavo restored Wolfsburgs lead in the 58th and Ricardo Rodriguez made it 3-1 on the rebound in the 73rd after Bernd Leno saved his initial penalty attempt. It was Leverkusens seventh defeat in nine games across all competitions, and means Bayern Munich can stretch its lead to 19 points with a win at Hannover on Sunday. "We have to try something different," Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia said. The home side started well in Hamburg, restricting opportunities for Dortmund, which visits Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League on Tuesday. Jiracek beat two defenders to meet Lasoggas cross at the far post, after the Hamburg striker did well to keep the ball in play. Calhanoglu won the ball from Nuri Sahin and Firat Arslan sent Lasogga through to finish with aplomb past Roman Weidenfeller. Rene Adler made a host of good saves as Hamburg kept a clean sheet for the first time after 14 games. His side conceded at least three in each of its previous seven games including the 5-0 German Cup defeat to Bayern Munich. "Its so nice to be rewarded like this at the end of the week," said Adler, who was criticized after last weeks 4-2 defeat to Braunschweig. Calhanoglu completed a memorable afternoon when he belted his free kick from near the centre circle over Weidenfeller. The Dortmund goalkeeper retreated but was unable to keep the ball out as it dipped in. Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp was philosophical about his sides sixth league defeat. "Theres that old saying that a good horse will only jump as high as it needs to. I hate that saying. I reckon a horse should jump as high as it can," Klopp said. "Today we looked to see how high we needed to jump. And as we realized that it wasnt so high, we were behind." Freiburg was left fuming after Christian Guenter was booked for diving in the 86th when it looked like he should have been awarded a penalty. Augsburg was leading 3-2 at the time. The home sides protests were ignored and Andre Hahn completed the scoring in injury time, leaving Freiburg one point below Hamburg. Hertha defender Levan Kobiashvili scored in the fifth in Stuttgart, making the 36-year-old the clubs oldest goal-scorer in the Bundesliga, only for Arthur Boka to equalize with a rocket from outside the penalty area before the break. Wagner scored with a header in the 87th, and was sent off in injury time with two yellow cards in as many minutes. "Were incredibly disappointed," Stuttgart coach Thomas Schneider said. "The team showed it was alive. They threw everything into it." http://www.baseballyankeesmlb.com/authe … es-jersey/ . Both of Padakins goals came in the second period while Zane Jones added a single in the first period for Calgary (13-6-4). The Marlies centre set up three goals, including the game-winner, as Toronto cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Oklahoma City Barons in American Hockey League action.OTTAWA - Mathieu Perreault is still looking for his first goal of the season — sort of.Perreault scored in the sixth round of the shootout as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Saturday night. The fact that as a shootout goal it wont count on the stats page doesnt bother him.It was a great feeling, said Perreault of the only goal scored in the shootout. I was looking at what the other guys were doing and they were all coming in with speed and trying to rip it so I just tried to slow it down a bit and pick a corner.Luckily it went in.Perreaults timely goal helped the Jets to improve to 6-0-2 over their past eight games.Although Perreaults shootout heroics won the game, goaltending was the story of the night. Ottawas Craig Anderson and Winnipegs Ondrej Pavelec stopped a combined 73-of-75 shots through regulation and overtime.Toby Enstrom had the goal for the Jets (8-5-2) and Pavelec made 37 saves plus six more in the shootout including a huge glove save off David Legwand.Chis Neil scored in regulation for the Senators (7-3-3) while Anderson made 36 saves and denied five skaters in the shootout.I dont like the shootouts at all. Especially ones that go that long, Pavelec said. We found a way to win and it continues what weve been doing lately. It was a tough game for us. (Anderson) has been great for Ottawa all season long and he was great again tonight. It was a battle. Its all about the two points and we got them.Neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie as they entered the third period with both goaltenders shining.Legwand did have Pavelec at his mercy with less than five minutes to play in regulation. With Mark Stuart off for tripping and the Senators enjoying their second power play of the game, the puck came to Legwand at the side of the goal but he fanned on his shot with Pavelec out of position.Mike Hoffman had a great opportunity in overtime to give Ottawa the win, but his quick shot from the slot was stopped by the quicker right pad from Pavelec.Moments later, Erik Karlsson took out Jets forward Evander Kane with a hip check at the blue-line that drew a rise out of the crowd and a long gaze from Kane at Karlsson. We had opportunities in overtime to put them away and I think we gave ourselves a chance to win and thats all you can ask for, Neil explained..ddddddddddddWhen you get to a shootout its a 50-50 coin flip and obviously (Anderson) gave us a chance to win. We werent able to bury one and it makes it tough when you cant score goals.Neil opened the scoring when he capitalized on the Senators only power play of the first period by beating Pavelec with a wrist shot on the short side at 11:48.The Jets used their only power play of the period to tie the game six minutes later when Enstroms point shot hit the post before finding the back of the net behind Anderson.Winnipeg outshot Ottawa 14-7 in the first period. It was Anderson that kept the game tied going into the second period. He had allowed just one goal in the two previous games heading into Saturday. It was one of those nights where both teams were playing pretty solid five-on-five and limiting the opportunities. At one point it both teams seemed to be throwing everything at the net and trying to generate things, Anderson said. Its a credit to both teams the way they played defensively and not allowing second and third opportunities. One of those games would be nice every once in a while to have few shots, but you have to look at the quality scoring chances and thats the key number. It doesnt matter what the shot clock is, its what kind of chances youre giving up and we played really solid defensively and didnt give up a whole lot so Im proud of the guys for doing that. The Senators outshot the Jets 12-10 in a scoreless second period that saw both goaltenders shine as they each made key saves.Notes: Chris Phillips, Bobby Ryan and Alex Caisson were all scratches for the Senators on Saturday. Adam Pardy and Matt Halischuk were scratches for the Jets…The Senators wrap up a four-game homestand Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs…The game was the first of five straight on the road for the Jets, who next play in Montreal Tuesday…Four of Clarke MacArthurs team-leading seven goals for the Senators have come on the power play…Kyle Turris is one assist shy of 100 for his career. He has 72 with the Senators…Jets forward Andrew Ladd is tied for the NHL lead in game-opening-goals with four…The Jets currently have the longest drought in the NHL without a hat trick. The last one was recorded by Eric Boulton on Dec. 18, 2010 when they were still the Atlanta Thrashers. HOUSTON -- Soony Saad scored late in the first half, and Dominic Dwyer added a penalty kick goal in the second to help 10-man Sporting Kansas City beat the Houston Dynamo 2-0 on Friday night. Kansas City snapped a five-game winless streak to improve to 6-5-4. "For them to be able to come in here and get a win being a man down and having a lot of changes, was huge," Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said. "From that perspective, its more for us than just three points going into the (World Cup) break." Houston (5-9-2) has lost four straight -- all shutouts -- and hasnt scored in 389 minutes. Houston had a few regulars, including starting goalkeeper Tally Hall, replaced in the starting lineup. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear took responsibility for the loss. "Its my fault for giving guys a chance," Kinnear said. "Im the guy who picks the team Im the guy who makes the subs. This game is my fault today, I take 100 per cent. I dont look back on years and say, Oh that was a tough stretch in 08. I dont know. Its not a good time right now." Saad scored in the 45th minute, taking a pass from Benny Feilhaber and sending a shot into the right net from just the left of the upper half-circle. "Even with us being down a man, I feel like we stayed mentally focused and picked our moments to go," Saad said. "On the one where I scored, that was just us stepping up as a team, capitalizing on a mistake and it was perfect right before half to get momentum going into the half." Dwyer struck in the 70th, firing his penalty kick low into the right net and freezing Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric. Sporting was awarded the penalty kick after Houstons A.J. Cochran had a hand ball in the box off a corner kick. Kansas City played the final 69 minutes a man down after Toni Dovale was given a straight red card in the 21st minute for elbowing Houstons Alex Lopez in the face. The win was Kansas Citys first since May 10 in Montreal. "We were up in it today with the red card early in the game," Dwyer said. "It was a lot of running for us. We stayed in touch with the game and was able to get the three points. It was a good test of character (to be down a man). We had a lot of guys who normally dont start who came in today and had a fantastic performance from everyone on the field." Warren Creavalle had a chance to score for Houston in the 76th minute, but his shot from the right box was saved by a diving Eric Konberg. Houston had two more chances late in second-half stoppage time. Giles Barnes sent a shot from inside the upper goalkeepers box off the face of Kronberg. The rebound attempt by Will Bruin in the middle of the box was slowed by the traffic in front of the net and cleared out. "I think we need to look at everything from back to front," Barnes said. "Im sure thats exactly what we will do out on the training field. There will be some guys coming back, some people can get some extra fitness work in so that after the break we come back ready to go." Sporting Kansas City lost captain and midfielder Paulo Nagamura in the third minute after he and Cochran went up for a ball and Cochran headed Nagamura in the back of the head. Alex Martinez was substituted in for Nagamura, who was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to the locker room where he was diagnosed with a concussion. He was not taken to a hospital. Houston lost starting defender David Horst in the ninth minute with a left leg injury after a corner kick. Horst hobbled to the sideline, and Eric Brunner came in for him. Feilhaber, who was tackled hard by Brunner on the first goal, left the game with a left shoulder injury at halftime. NASCAR has issued a ban on testing next season, so SHR believes it is giving its two teams a jump on 2015.For Busch, who won at Martinsville Speedway in March and made the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, the change was necessary to give team owner Gene Haas the results he wants. Haas hand-picked Busch to drive a new fourth car for SHR, but Busch believe he has underperformed with first-year crew chief Daniel Knost.I think thats why Gene Haas wanted to make a change. He wants more, Busch said Friday at Martinsville. Winning a race and getting in the Chase isnt what the 41 car is here to do. Its to be competitive week in and week out and have shots at winning.Tony Gibson will move from Patricks car to Buschs car, and Knost will take over Patricks team. Both will bring their entire crews with them, and both will start with next weeks test at Homestead.Busch is excited to get a veteran crew chief in Gibson, who worked on Alan Kulwickis 1992 championship team and had stops at Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt Inc.Knost has an engineering background and didnt suit Buschs style. He likes the old-school sense he had early in his career with Jimmy Fennig, who led him to the 2004 championship at Roush Fenway Racing, and with Todd Berrier, who guided Busch to a Chase berth last year at Furniture Row Racing.Busch said his troubles at Team Penske began when the organization became more engineering-driven.At Penske, some of the issues that were arising from the engineers advancing through the systems werent necessarily what was going to work best with me, Bussch said.dddddddddddd.Knosts background will suit Patrick, who is engineering-driven from her time in IndyCar.As far as Daniel, hes a young, aggressive, very smart engineer. Danica is kind of used to more of that feeling with the engineers from her background, said SHR competition director Greg Zipadelli. She actually a while ago talked about working with a younger engineer and building that relationship over time. I just feel like it was a time to do it.Zipadelli noted that Patrick has run better the last two months and her qualifying is up — her average starting spot is 21.3 compared to 30.1 last season — but shes 27th in the Sprint Cup standings.Shes made a ton of progress, Zipadelli said. Her speed on the racetrack, her qualifying is better, but her race finishes arent. And at the end of the day, thats really what counts. So how do we help and encourage that?Knost was an engineer for Patrick when Zipadelli was her crew chief during her partial 2012 Cup season with SHR and already has a relationship with her crew chief.Still, hes only been given an interim tag and has three races to work things out with Patrick. We click and the things that are felt in the race car and then conveyed over the radio and the changes that are made in relationship to that, if that takes a fast course and a good direction and we seem to click well and make progress throughout the weekend, then I think that will be a really positive sign, Patrick said. Thats always a challenge. If thats good, then I feel like thats a good sign for the future. For now, the biggest concern seems to be regarding how Gibson handles Busch, who tends to get heated on the radio with his crew chiefs. Zipadelli acknowledged that Knost was thrown to the wolves in that regard, but contends Gibsons experience makes it a non-factor.Thats just one of those things that comes along with Kurt, Zipadelli said. I think (Gibsons) heard it all. You let it go in one ear and out the other. Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

While the rest of the hockey world continues to debate Hockey Canadas selections and omissions for the mens team going to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, executive director Steve Yzermans roster has already earned a big thumbs up from The Great One. "I really think he put together a good team," Wayne Gretzky told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com. "Hes got skill, hes got size, hes got depth, hes got a good coaching staff, and theyve done all their homework. Theyve done everything they can do. Now its up to the players to play at the level that they need to play at to bring back the gold medal." Gretzky is no stranger to building teams for the Olympics, as he helped select the 2002 and 2006 Canadian teams. The 2002 squad snapped Canadas 50-year gold medal drought at the Olympics in Salt Lake City, while the 2006 team finished off the podium in Torino. The team selection is always a controversial process, with fans and pundits naturally second-guessing the picks once theyre announced. "My son, who is 21, who doesnt follow hockey all that much, was showing me the second team that Canada could have put together, which would have been pretty good," Gretzky told LeBrun. "So, even kids down here are talking about it." Gretzky added that Yzerman, who also led the selection committee for Canadas gold-medal winning team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, did a good job of avoiding any real obvious controversy with most of their choices. "There was really no controversy on the three goalies," he told LeBrun. "Those are the three guys and with the ability to have eight defensemen instead of seven, there really wasnt any talk about so and so was left off." Theres one difficult task that Gretzky never had to endure - wear an NHL GMs hat at the same time and tell his own player that he didnt make the team. Thats something that Yzerman had to do with his Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis on Tuesday morning. "Ive always said that its an easy hard job," said Gretzky. "Its easy because youre picking from 50 really good players, so youve got an easy task in terms of having a good team. But its a hard task in getting down to those final few picks; thats what really makes it difficult. Its never fun. It wont be controversial if they win, but as always, itll be controversial if they lose." John Stockton Jersey . "Im not even sure how you would determine an advantage.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Its still early, but cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner are both enjoying their new starts with the New England Patriots. "Last year it was a tough year when I played in Tampa Bay," said Revis, who signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Patriots, with a $20 million team option for a second year. "It was tough, coming off the ACL and everything, so it was a long year, for me, personally just trying to recover. "Now, Im ready to go and Im just trying to sit here and absorb everything in, just trying to enjoy my time and get ready for the season," Revis added Friday, the third day of the Patriots organized team activities. Browner didnt have a long year in Seattle — not in terms of games played, anyway. He was suspended indefinitely by the NFL in December for what was termed multiple violations of the leagues drug policy. That caused him to miss the Seahawks late regular season and playoff games and their run to winning the Super Bowl. He gets a ring and even visited the White House with the team. Now, hell sit out the first four games under the remaining suspension as he starts a three-year, $12.35 million contract with his new team. "Its fun to be back out here," Browner said. "My situation last year was unfortunate. Im happy to be out here." Revis is in New England to anchor what previously had been a maligned defensive backfield. The secondary was clearly better last year when Aqib Talib was on the field. Now, Talib is in Denver, and Revis is the top guy on his third team in three years; he also was with the Jets before being traded to Tampa Bay. Quarterback Tom Brady has said hes already tired of throwing the ball in Revis direction. "Its always a defensive annd offensive competition going and I think both sides, what were really trying to do is just get better at the end of the day," Revis said.dddddddddddd "Its good to have the same jersey on as Tom and everybody else on this team. "For offence and defence, its competition, but at the same time were all just trying to get better." And so far, both players like what they see from their new surroundings. "Its totally different," Revis said. "Theres things that you didnt expect how this organization is run from top to bottom. Youve got to take your hat off to Mr. (Robert) Kraft for how this organization operates. Theyre a winning organization and Im happy those guys gave me an opportunity to come in here and be a part of it." Browner agreed, saying his new situation is "very exciting. Im on a great team. Im fortunate to be here with these guys. I look forward to playing." Asked repeatedly about his suspension, Browner said, "Thats in the past, man. I dont care what nobody thinks. Thats in the past; Im looking forward to playing for the Patriots." But he did get to go to Washington with the rest of the champion Seahawks. "It was a good experience, a great experience," he said, "to go meet the president, look around the White House a little bit." NOTES: Quarterback Johnny Garoppolo and tight end Asa Watson, both recently drafted by the Patriots, were among the missing at the OTAs. Both were attending the NFLPAs Rookie Premiere symposium. . Ezekiel Elliott's phone records turned over in domestic violence probe

The NFLPA has turned over the phone records of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott to the league as it completes its investigation into a domestic violence accusation against him made by a former girlfriend last year, according to USA Today.

along with other documents, to league investigators who could be closing in on a conclusion in the case. It’s possible the league’s findings will be revealed prior to the start of season,The players’ union handed over the records, or perhaps even before the Cowboys report to training camp in July.

Elliott already has spoken to NFL investigators in the case and now awaits his fate. He still could be subject to NFL discipline even though charges were not filed in the case if it was deemed he violated the league’s player conduct rules. The league appears to be intentionally taking its time with Elliott’s case following the mishandling of the domestic violence accusations levied against former New York Giants kicker Josh Brown,Authentic Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jersey, along with other bungled DV cases by the league in the past.

NFL Legend Warren Sapp: I'm Donating My Brain to Science

the Hall of Fame defensive tackle who retired from the NFL in 2008 following 13 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders,Warren Sapp, announced on Tuesday that he will donate his brain to science after his death.

In a letter and video for The Players' Tribune, Sapp explained that an email from Fred Willis,Authentic Lavonte David Jersey, who eventually left the NFL because of repeated concussions,Authentic Mike Evans Jersey, convinced him to donate his brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation. The foundation was founded in 2007 and is "dedicated to advancing the study,O. J. Howard Jersey, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups." Sapp said he wanted football to be in a better place when he left than we he got into it and that quotes from NFL owners downplaying the impact of concussions motivated him to take action.

"We play in a macho league and we're talking about Hall-of-Famers now who are immortalized forever,Justin Evans Jersey," Sapp said. "Made busts and everything – legends of the game. There's no way any of us want to really admit that we can't remember how to get home or a grocery list that the wife has given us or how to go pick up our kids to the school,Chris Godwin Jersey, or whatever it may be."

I'm gonna get a little more sleep. Maybe it's something I did last night,Kendell Beckwith Jersey,"You try to 'Alright, maybe something I drank' or whatever it is, but it's also a very weakening feeling because you feel like a child. I need help. I need somebody to help me find something that I could've found with my eyes closed," Sapp continued. "You try to find a reason that it's not 'It's my brain.’ That I'm not deteriorating right before my own eyes. It's the most frightening feeling, in the dead of night, half asleep."

Sapp also admitted that he "just can't remember anymore like I used to," which is why he relies on his phone to remind himself of what he needs to do throughout the day. Football is better and safer than it used to be,Lavonte David Jersey,Mike Evans Jersey, he says,Authentic O. J. Howard Jersey,Authentic Justin Evans Jersey, but it’s now a matter of making the game safer for everyone involved from the youth to high schoolers to future NFL players.

Sapp isn't the first NFL player to donate his brain to science and he certainly won't be the last. Earlier this year,Authentic Chris Godwin Jersey, ESPN published a story revealing that Dr. Ann McKee,Authentic Kendell Beckwith Jersey, 30 former NFL players – including three Pro-Bowlers – pledged to donate their brains to the Concussion Legacy Foundation. Shortly thereafter, a Boston University neuropathologist, had found CTE in 47 of the 48 brains she had studied of deceased NFL players. The more studies show the long-term effects of concussions and the more the NFL distances itself from them, the more likely it is that players will do whatever they can to advance the conversation.

Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

Wentz's 2nd season building towards Peyton Manning, not Tim Couch

The expectations are understandably high for Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.

He’s coming off a season in which he set an NFL rookie record for completions, while becoming the first Eagles quarterback to play all 16 games since Donovan McNabb in 2008.

Wentz led the Eagles to a 7-9 record despite not having dependable outside receivers, an inconsistent running game and a banged-up offensive line.

signing free agent received Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, and running back LeGarrette Blount,Expectations are higher for Wentz going into his second season. The Eagles filled some of those holes, who led the NFL with 18 touchdowns last season for the Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots.

even at 24. That was evident the week of July 10 when he hosted the Eagles’ wide receivers for workouts in Fargo, North Dakota,Wentz is already perceived as a leader, where Wentz attended college at North Dakota State.

” Wentz said. “Having a year under my belt bodes well for that position. But again, I try to just do it organically … I’ll be the same and try to elevate all the players around me. I think it comes with the position,“I think it naturally comes with the position, but I think it’s a natural thing for me as well.”

What is a legitimate expectation for Wentz, who as a rookie had his share of growing pains as he ranked just 25th in the NFL with a quarterback rating of 79.3?

782 yards with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Those numbers are comparable to Peyton Manning’s rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, when the Colts went 3-13. Manning threw for 3,Wentz threw for 3,739 yards with 28 TDs and 26 INTs and a QB rating of 71.2.

the Colts went 13-3 and Manning threw for 4,The next season,135 yards with 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and a QB rating of 90.5.

Manning is by far the exception rather than the rule for quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 1998 who went through losing seasons as rookies while starting at least 10 games in the year they were drafted.

there were 16 quarterbacks who met those criteria, Tennessee’s Marcus Mariota, according to profootball-reference.com, including Wentz. Of the previous 15,Since 1998, Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston (both last season), only five had winning records in Year 2 -- Manning, Jacksonville’s Byron Leftwich in 2004 and Minnesota’s Christian Ponder in 2012.

Only Manning and Ponder led their teams to the playoffs. Ponder quickly regressed. He went 2-6 in Year 3 and lost his starting job. He was out of the NFL after his fourth season, when he got into just one game.

Blaine Gabbert, Joey Harrington, Brandon Weeden,The 10 who didn’t have winning records in Year 2 include forgettable quarterbacks like Tim Couch, David Carr and Blake Bortles. Bortles is still the starter in Jacksonville despite an 11-34 record in three seasons.

who took the Panthers to the Super Bowl in the 2015-16 season; Detroit’s Matthew Stafford, who has taken the Lions to the playoffs only twice in eight seasons; and former Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford,That list also includes Cam Newton, who is still looking for his first winning season as he enters his eighth season.

but that was after sitting for three seasons behind Brett Favre, Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck and Dallas’ Dak Prescott, so he wasn’t included. Neither were quarterbacks like Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, Baltimore’s Joe Flacco,Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers also had a losing season in his first year as a starter, who not only had winning records after becoming full-time starters as rookies, Seattle’s Russell Wilson, but took their teams to the playoffs.

So where does that leave Wentz?

putting those pieces together,Womens Bart Starr Jersey,“Realistically,Authentic Randall Cobb Jersey,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said. “With the addition of LeGarrette and some of the receivers now, we definitely want to see incremental growth, we can rely more on some of those guys.”

For the Eagles, “incremental growth” for 2017 clearly implies a nine- or 10-win season and a playoff berth. But it also means that Wentz grows into the franchise quarterback that the Eagles expected when they traded to move up to No. 2 in the 2016 draft.

beginning with a 3-0 start and Wentz’s 103.5 QB rating at that point. But then opponents adjusted,Authentic Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jersey,The Eagles saw glimpses of Wentz’s potential last season, and the Eagles lost 9 of 11 games before winning the final two.

Wentz learned and became more comfortable in the pocket as the season went along, learning when to throw the ball away or when to take off and run.

Pederson said he expects to see more growth this season.

just understanding the overall structure of the offense and the plays,“I don’t want to keep a box on him, sort of out-of-the-box thinkers, and situational football. He’ll be so much better in those areas.”,” he said. “I don’t want to keep a lid on him. And he thinks a lot like I do, which is good to have. He’s creative

Manning had exponential growth in Year 2,But should the Eagles expect more than “incremental growth” from Wentz? After all, and there are similarities to what the Eagles are doing to help Wentz in his second season compared to what the Colts did in 1999 leading into Manning’s second season.

000 yards receiving or 100 receptions in a season. He was hardly being talked about as a Hall of Fame wide receiver at that point.,In 1998, wide receiver Marvin Harrison led the Colts with 59 receptions for 776 yards. It was Harrison’s third season in the NFL, and he had yet to have 1

673 yards with the Eagles.,Through three seasons, Harrison had 196 catches for 2,478 yards. That wasn’t even as good as Jordan Matthews’ first three seasons of 225 receptions for 2

while James rushed for 1,But in 1999, and they took off. Harrison had 116 receptions for 1,553 yards and had another 586 yards receiving., the Colts added more depth at wide receiver and drafted running back Edgerrin James,663 yards

133 the next season before being limited by injuries and a four-game suspension the last two seasons.,That is not to suggest that Matthews will have the kind of season that Harrison had, but Jeffery could. He had 1,421 yards receiving in 2013 with the Chicago Bears and 1

Darren Sproles and rookie Donnel Pumphrey could.,And that is not to suggest that Blount will match James’ production, especially at Blount’s age of 30. But the combination of Blount, Wendell Smallwood

of course,Much of that, depends on Wentz.

taking in the scenery and working out.,So far, the players believe in Wentz and see him as a leader. That was evident during the workouts in North Dakota, where Wentz was able to bond with his wide receivers. They posted video on social media of themselves canoeing

They clearly also had plenty of fun as Jeffery tweeted: “Fargo, I’m out here for the first time! I keep hearing that I have to try a bison burger. Who’s got the best one out here?”

and redheads. Shout out to Carson Wentz!”,Then there was Matthews, who was captured on video by Jeffery saying: “We out here in North Dakota. Ain’t no rap stations on the radio or nothing baby. Straight bison burgers, country music

None of that guarantees that Wentz will develop into a franchise quarterback. But Pederson is committed to finding out when asked if he plans to give Wentz leeway should he struggle this season.

probably wouldn’t be the right way to do it and to handle it.”,Authentic Bart Starr Jersey,Authentic Aaron Rodgers Jersey,“I think you have to,Authentic Jordy Nelson Jersey,” Pederson replied. “It’s confidence in him. I think sometimes you can get a knee-jerk reaction, make moves that looking back

when the Chiefs started out 1-5 and he and head coach Andy Reid considered benching starting quarterback Alex Smith. The Chiefs decided to stick with Smith,Pederson then referenced his time as an offensive coordinator in Kansas City,Womens Aaron Rodgers Jersey,Womens Jordy Nelson Jersey,Womens Randall Cobb Jersey,Womens Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jersey, and then won 10 straight games to make the playoffs.

” Pederson said,“You gotta show confidence in that player, “and show confidence in your team to get it done.”

Saints RB battle: Adrian Peterson, change-of-pace back? It's Big Easy to believe

It will be weird to see Adrian Peterson in a Saints uniform this season. What should not be weird is him finding his new groove as more of a receiving back.

Peterson, 32, is in the process of reinventing himself in the best way possible in New Orleans' loaded offense.

After the former Viking finally found his new NFL home in April, bursty, it was presumed he would be an early-down power alternative to oft-banged up, when the team used a third-round draft pick on Alvin Kamara, sometimes-doghoused Mark Ingram. That seemed even more the case a few days later, who built his stock as a busy,Authentic J.J. Watt Jersey, pass-catching back in college.

But from the get-go,Authentic DeAndre Hopkins Jersey, coach Sean Payton said there would be a well-defined role for Peterson mixed in with Ingram. Kamara has done well early as a rookie, but it's becoming more evident that he's more of an initial threat to take touches away from Travaris Cadet despite the latter's re-signing in March. That's the remnant of the Darren Sproles pure receiving role.

As for Peterson,Womens Jadeveon Clowney Jersey, it's Big Easy to see that the Saints want him to be their new Pierre Thomas.

The last time the Saints won the NFC South,Womens Duane Brow Jersey, Sproles, in 2011, they had the NFL's No. 6 rushing offense, just like their division- and Super Bowl-winning team in 2009. That backfield consisted of a rookie Ingram, Thomas and a little bit of Chris Ivory.

The touches broke down like this: Sproles 173, as the top three backs kept each other fresh, Thomas 165, Ingram 133. It was the untraditional 37-35-28 split, but it worked, and the team averaged 4.9 yards per carry.

It's important to note Sproles and Thomas were the two most experienced in the group, with Ingram a clear third in the committee. Given how keeping Drew Brees upright is critical for the league's No. 1 passing offense from a year ago, it's hard for Payton to trust a rookie often in pass protection.

That history works nicely with the present. Kamara figures to be an even more distant third than Ingram was in 2011, because he won't be needed on early downs. About 100 touches seem like the cap considering the Saints are bound to carry a fourth back.

Peterson and Ingram share similar rushing traits, 27, and Ingram, has much less wear and tear. Ingram has done more as a receiver and has been better than Peterson in that capacity of late. The wheelhouse of Ingram's rushing workload has been 200-plus carries,Womens J.J. Watt Jersey,Womens DeAndre Hopkins Jersey, with which he has been effective when healthy the past two seasons.

The Saints shouldn't mess with that formula too much on early downs. That's where Peterson can be perfectly used, supplementing that with 40-50 receptions,Authentic Jadeveon Clowney Jersey, getting around 150 carries as a rushing replacement for Tim Hightower,Authentic Duane Brow Jersey,Authentic Whitney Mercilus Jersey, a high watermark for his career. With some 250 touches for Ingram and 200 for Peterson, that would be a 55-45 split.

Ingram has had some monster rumbles the past two years,Womens Whitney Mercilus Jersey, but to maintain that, but Peterson led the league in rushing for big plays (10 or more yards) in 2015. The Saints in minicamp and OTAs saw that Peterson has plenty of burst left, he can't have anything close to his Vikings-like heavy grind.

Expanding Peterson's role as a receiver makes sense as a way to get him more in the open field without taking the same power running abuse. It's scary to think of Peterson as a dangerous change-of-pace back with fresher legs, but with the Saints' explosiveness and passing volume, it's not hard to believe.

The Saints have an offense unique to what Peterson has had for most of his career: good balance, a strong line and a great quarterback. The threat of Brees opening things up downfield will create creases Peterson hasn't seen in a while, and the two also should develop some quick chemistry in the passing game.

San Francisco 49ers sign No. 3 overall pick Solomon Thomas

The San Francisco 49ers have signed No. 3 overall pick Solomon Thomas and now have all 10 of the team's 2017 draft picks under contract.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch had been encouraged the deal could get done ahead of the team's first training camp practice Friday.

The defensive lineman out of Stanford, who got a four-year deal,Authentic Amara Darboh Jersey, had signed previously and was cleared to go after missing the offseason program rehabilitating his injured right shoulder., was one of two first-round picks for the 49ers this year. The other, linebacker Reuben Foster

Adding urgency to Thomas' situation was the fact that he missed the offseason program because Stanford was still in session until after the end of minicamp.

Thomas played three seasons at Stanford,Womens Arthur Brown Jersey, registering 101 tackles, four fumble recoveries and two touchdowns., 11.5 sacks,Womens Mike Alstott Jersey, 25.5 tackles for loss

NaVorro Bowman weighs in on Reuben Foster, 49ers LB competition

49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has a terrific mentor to learn from this season in four-time All-Pro NaVorro Bowman, and so far it seems like Bowman likes what he's seen in the talented rookie.

Bowman talked a bit about Foster Thursday,Authentic Doug Martin Jersey, saying he thinks Foster has what it takes to be a success in the NFL.

"I think so. I think from what I've seen, he understands the game, so I really do think he'll have a successful career."," Bowman said. "We've had a chance to work out together several times and he's excited to be around me. I think that's the first step into building a relationship the way that we're trying to get to. We've seen what he's done in college. We just want to transfer it here to the NFL. He's open ears, open to learning new things. That's what we're going to need to get to that point

There's still some things for Foster to learn, especially given that his participation in the spring was limited while he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery. But Bowman says Foster has the ability to make the adjustments needed to make an early impact., of course

"He plays the linebacker position right," Bowman said. "I just want him to understand this game is more angle-like in the NFL. Guys can cut faster and do a lot more things. You just have to transfer that understanding to the NFL level. He wouldn't be here or gotten drafted the way he did if we didn't believe he could do those things. He's definitely a linebacker and understands the game as much as he needs to to be successful."

The big question with Foster, is whether or not he'll be able to push veteran Malcolm Smith for a starting spot at weak-side linebacker. Bowman says Smith is ahead of foster at the moment but that it doesn't necessarily mean Foster should be counted out.,Womens Amara Darboh Jersey, now that he's been given the all clear in terms of health

"Malcolm's got a head start and he's been playing for a while now, and I think that's the reason were were able to click out there during minicamp because he understood what was coming and we were able to talk about a few things as it was going on. But our room is very tight-knit. We're all about getting a solution out of any problem that we come up with as a group. We let the coaches really decide and handle the rotation and things like that. Malcolm's definitely a good player and understands the game as well.",Authentic Arthur Brown Jersey," Bowman said. "He understands the game

Who the hell is new Ravens QB David Olson?

The Baltimore Ravens had to sign a new quarterback after Joe Flacco suffered a back injury that will keep him out of practice for a while.

Despite talking up Colin Kaepernick on Thursday,Authentic Mike Alstott Jersey, the Ravens passed on the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback as well as other free agents with NFL experience to take David Olson instead.

If you’re not sure who Olson is,Authentic Jameis Winston Jersey, neither is anyone else.

Even the Ravens aren’t quite sure what his name is. On Thursday night, the team announced the signing of “David Olson” on Twitter, it lists “David Olsen” on its roster.,Womens Jameis Winston Jersey, but as of Friday morning

Who is David Olson?

Olson, 25,Womens Doug Martin Jersey, an arena football league based in the Midwest., just finished a 12-game season with the Kansas City Phantoms of the Champions Indoor Football (CIF) league

He also spent time with the CIF’s Wichita Force and the Indoor Football League’s Iowa Barnstormers — the same arena team that produced Kurt Warner.

Before his pro career got started, spending four seasons at Stanford before transferring as a graduate student to Clemson. He never threw a pass at Stanford and completed one of three passes at Clemson for a loss of 1 yard., Olson was a career backup in college

All of his passes in college can fit in one gif:

While Olson stands at 6’2, 220 pounds — decent size for a passer — he may have the least impressive athletic resume of any NFL quarterback ever.

Why sign David Olson?

The Ravens had other options at quarterback. Even if the team wanted to steer clear of Kaepernick, there’s a lengthy list of available players with NFL experience or, positive passing yardage in college., at the very least

Slimmed down Carlos Hyde determined to have big season

If this is Carlos Hyde's last training camp with the 49ers, he won't be going out without a fight.

There's been all sorts of speculation surrounding Hyde's long term future over the offseason and whether or not he fits in the plans under new head coach Kyle Shanahan. He's in the last year of his contract, a player Shanahan is very high on,Authentic Kendell Beckwith Jersey, and some have questioned whether or not he's the best fit in Shanahan's system. Add in the fact the 49ers traded up in Round 4 of the draft to select running back Joe Williams, and Hyde's future with the 49ers is seemingly up in the air as he heads into the 2017 season.

Whether his future is in San Francisco or elsewhere,Authentic DeSean Jackson Jersey, Hyde is coming into training camp in top physical shape, weighing in at 228 pounds.

“This is the lightest I’ve been since high school,” Hyde said Thursday,Womens Adam Humphries Jersey, per 49ers.com. “I’m in the best shape of my life right now.”

Hyde said he chose to stay in Santa Clara over summer break to work with 49ers strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright instead of returning home to Florida. It's a decision that seems to have been the correct one.

"He looks tremendous," general manager John Lynch told reporters Thursday. "He really has dedicated himself. He's changed his body type this offseason. That to me at the least bit shows a commitment."

Hyde will face competition from Williams as well as rookie Matt Breida and veterans Tim Hightower,Womens Marcus Mariota Jersey, and if he's able to put together a big season and stay healthy -- something he has had difficulty doing during his NFL career -- it should pay off this year and beyond., Kapri Bibbs and Raheem Mostert during the preseason. He remains the favorite to win the starting job

"I want to be the No. 1 rusher in the league, per 49ers.com. “I feel like I have the opportunity to do that in this scheme.",” Hyde said

Ravens sign quarterback who played for Jim Harbaugh

The Ravens are signing one of Jim Harbaugh's former quarterbacks but it isn't Colin Kaepernick.

Down to two quarterbacks in training camp, according to reports Thursday night., the Ravens have agreed to terms with arena league quarterback David Olson

With starter Joe Flacco expected to miss a week with a back injury, according to NFL Network. NFL Draft Diamonds first reported Olson’s signing., the Ravens had been in search of another option under center. Olson worked out for the team Thursday and is expected to join the team today

Olson played under Jim Harbaugh, the brother of the Ravens head coach, at Stanford. Most recently, Olson played for the KC Phantoms of the Champions Indoor Football League.

Thomas remains unsigned but Foster ready to go as camp opens

San Francisco 49ers rookies and veterans reported to training camp Thursday,Womens Kendell Beckwith Jersey, with one notable omission as first-round pick Solomon Thomas remained unsigned.

Thomas is one of three unsigned first-round picks across the NFL along with No. 5 overall pick Corey Davis (Tennessee) and No. 24 overall pick Gareon Conley (Oakland). 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters Thursday the two sides are in the process of negotiations and that he's hopeful the ensuing start of training camp will push a deal to get done.

"We're still working on that,Womens DeSean Jackson Jersey," Lynch said. "There's been a lot of productive conversations on that the last couple days. Just left some of those. We're hopeful we can get this done in the necessary time."

Lynch was asked later in the press conference if there was a point where he would be concerned over whether or not Thomas would be ready for the regular season if he hadn't reported to camp.

"I'm concerned right now,"  I wish this were done. I think it should be done. I'm disappointed with myself in a certain way that it's not, part of the game. As I said though,Authentic Adam Humphries Jersey, but I think I'm also learning that this is part of the business,Authentic Marcus Mariota Jersey, I'm encouraged and I'm hopeful that we can get it done and we'll see. We've got a couple hours."

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed optimism Thomas would be on the field by the time the 49ers put pads on, which will happen during the third practice.

"I think Solomon wants to be here as bad as anyone,Authentic Delanie Walker Jersey," Shanahan said. "We want him here as bad as anyone. I'm confident we'll get it done."

Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

49ers top pick Solomon Thomas signs on 1st day of practice

Solomon Thomas signed his contract,Authentic O. J. Howard Jersey, and ran out to the field to join the rest of his San Francisco 49ers teammates at the first training camp practice under coach Kyle Shanahan., rushed to the locker room to throw on a jersey and cleats

" Thomas said Friday. "I'm just very glad we got this done as quickly as possible.",Authentic Chris Godwin Jersey,"It was amazing to get out here and be here Day 1 with my team

Thomas was able to pass the conditioning test while his teammates practiced and then watched the team drills in the final half of practice. He is expected to jump right in on Saturday.

" Shanahan said. "I expect to see him out there tomorrow.","We've seen Solomon. We've seen his workouts and stuff. He's a guy I believe is in shape

he said he wasn't worried this would be a long-term absence even though Chargers defensive lineman Joey Bosa missed a month last summer after also being drafted third overall and being represented by CAA.,While Thomas was anxious to join his teammates while waiting at his college campus at Stanford for the deal to get done

Thomas said he didn't get involved in the details of the negotiations between his agent and general manager John Lynch and just waited to be told when the deal was done.

" Thomas said. "I trusted my agent. I hired him for a reason. He knew how fast I wanted to get out there. He knew that I wanted to be out there with the team. He knows I didn't want to be by myself for another month. I was going to let him take care of everything. Both parties worked extremely hard and got things done as quickly as possible.","I was not concerned at all

Now Thomas can be part of a rebuilding project in San Francisco after the 49ers matched a franchise record with 14 losses last season.

That led to the firing of coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke in the latest organizational overhaul. Coach Jim Harbaugh was forced out in 2014 after a four-year tenure that included three trips to the NFC title game and one Super Bowl loss and Jim Tomsula lasted just one season before being replaced by Kelly.

the 49ers appear to have the stability that had been lacking in recent years. That's why the players who have endured the recent turmoil are so excited about the start of camp.,Now with Lynch and Shanahan in place and armed with six-year contracts

"You say that every year, 'This is the year we're doing it.' I've said that the last three years. But I do feel different about this year. It's one thing to say it. But I feel confident with the direction the team is going."," left tackle Joe Staley said. "Everybody comes in at this time of year and saying those exact same things day one

especially on the defensive front seven. The team used first-round picks in 2015 and '16 on defensive linemen Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner and then added Thomas and linebacker Reuben Foster in the first round this year.,Part of the reason for optimism is some of the young players added in recent years

intercepting a pass in a seven-on-seven drill.,Foster did not participate in team drills in the offseason program as he recovered from a shoulder injury but made an immediate impact on the first day of camp

" Shanahan said. "I know he's been chomping at the bit for a while now. It was good to see him go through it full speed,Authentic Lavonte David Jersey,"It was good to get him out there, get him on the field,Authentic Mike Evans Jersey, which was good for him. It was a good first day.",Womens O. J. Howard Jersey, deal with getting aligned right and stuff. I think he got an interception out there today

NOTES: S Jimmie Ward injured his hamstring in the conditioning test Thursday and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. He is week to week. ... Jaquiski Tartt got the chance to replace Ward at free safety alongside Eric Reid.

' is ready to prove himself,Bowman says his Achilles is 'fine

NaVorro Bowman will be one of the most intriguing defensive players at 49ers training camp in the weeks ahead as he attempts to bounce back from an Achilles injury that caused him to miss the final 12 games of the 2016 season.

and he says he already proved during the spring he's at 100 percent.,Womens Justin Evans Jersey,Bowman drew some praise from 49ers coaches during offseason activities as he looked to be making strong progress in coming back from the injury. Now he has to do it with pads on

those weren't just lackadaisical practices. We got after it. Coaches wanted to see what kind of players we had,"I've been full speed," Bowman told reporters Thursday. "I've done everything throughout minicamp. Those practices that we had, and I completed that. I've stood tall with all the workouts. So the Achilles is fine. I'm not worried about that. I'm just ready to put the pads back on and fly around.", who could practice without pads. I think that's harder than practicing with pads because you have to protect your teammates but also get your job done

As a four-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler, Bowman is one of the most decorated 49ers players, and now it's time for him to answer the bell., but he feels he still has something to prove in the weeks ahead. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan let Bowman know in the spring he'd be in a competition at linebacker

"I'm just going to put the work in and be ready to go," Bowman said. "It's time for me to just do what I know I can do. Like I said before,Womens Lavonte David Jersey, but I've taken pride in leading them and showing them the way.",Womens Mike Evans Jersey,Authentic Justin Evans Jersey,Womens Chris Godwin Jersey, the accolades I've earned doesn't mean anything. I'm starting from scratch. I'm hungry. A lot of guys look up to me and understand what I've accomplished

Josh Doctson impresses at Redskins' Saturday session

Terrelle Pryor has been getting much of the early praise, but Josh Doctson isn't far behind.

Doctson has proven a nearly impossible cover in 1-on-1 drills during the early portion of camp. In fact,Looking to rebound following a disappointing rookie season in which the Washington Redskins wide receiver saw action in only three games,Authentic Will Fuller V Jersey, that the former first-round pick has provided some of camp's most memorable highlights in only three days.

Doctson took his game to new heights on Saturday,After torching Quinton Dunbar on the first day of training camp,Womens Andrew Luck Jersey, beating Josh Norman for a touchdown and making a ridiculous one-handed grab.

Best play of the day: Receiver Josh Doctson fooled corner Josh Norman to break wide open for a long touchdown catch. But that wasn't as impressive as Doctson's one-handed grab over corner Dashaun Phillips in a one-on-one drill. Doctson jumped and reached back over Phillips and caught the pass with his right hand.

With the Redskins losing DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency, and if not for injuries during his rookie season,Womens T.Y. Hilton Jersey, the pressure is on Doctson to contribute in what amounts to more or less his first season. Talent has never been the question with the wideout, he'd likely have entered camp as the team's No. 1 wide receiver.

it'll be a new look receiving corps in Washington this season,Along with Pryor and Jamison Crowder, but early signs suggest that it could be even better than year's past.

Keith Marshall tears patellar tendon, out for season

singled out Saturday by coach Jay Gruden as a player to watch, Washington Redskins running back Keith Marshall,Womens Will Fuller V Jersey, suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Marshall tore the patellar tendon in his right knee during a full-team drill in practice Saturday. He had run to the outside, then cut back inside when he got hit. The Redskins were in full pads for the first time in camp.

Marshall slammed his fist on the ground as teammates came over to check on him. He was then carted off the field. What had been a spirited practice became more subdued.

Marshall missed last season with an elbow injury after the Redskins selected him in the seventh round earlier that year. At Georgia,Authentic Andrew Luck Jersey, Marshall tore his ACL.

Marshall wasn't guaranteed of a roster spot but his speed always intrigued the Redskins. Before practice Saturday, Gruden had said people were "sleeping" on Marshall.

D.J. Swearinger makes one-handed grab at practice

D.J. Swearinger is set to add another dimension to the Washington Redskins secondary.

The free-agent signing at safety has already been praised by head coach Jay Gruden,Authentic T.Y. Hilton Jersey, and he stands to play a huge role in the Redskins' defensive scheme this upcoming season.

Swearinger has been noted for his vocal leadership in the secondary, however his talents at the position were on full display as he made covered Vernon Davis stride for stride before making a leaping one-handed grab along the sideline.

but it shows the man coverage skills and athleticism that Swearinger brings to the secondary,Authentic Vontae Davis Jersey,He may have come down out of bounds, a huge contrast to the struggles the Redskins endured at the position a season ago.

Doing it in practice and doing it on Sunday are two totally different things,Womens Vontae Davis Jersey, but it looks like the Redskins got a major upgrade this offseason.

Re: A PROPOS DES PERFORMANCES si pas de vent

A force awakens: The Redskins’ linebacking corps is well-stocked and on the rise

When constructing a strong defense,Authentic Andrew Luck Jersey, smart architects seek a few key ingredients: Depth, competition and versatility.

Washington should have a good shot at improving.,The puzzle hasn’t yet started to really come together for the Washington Redskins’ defense. But the pieces are all here,Womens T.Y. Hilton Jersey, this unit already has all three of those traits. As a result, and based on early indications

Washington coaches no shortage of options.,No position group reflects this better than the linebacking corps. Whether it’s the inside ’backers, where five of the 10 players boast starting capabilities,Womens Blake Bortles Jersey, or the edge rushers, where coaches have three legit candidates for the spot opposite Pro Bowler Ryan Kerrigan

and two or three players capable of starting at the two outside spots.,This of course is a good problem. There have been years when the Redskins have had only two or three players to consider for starting inside linebacker

because both he and Compton wound up finishing out the year as starters with Robinson and Riley hobbled.,The depth improvements started a couple years ago. In 2015, and Compton was really the only skillful backup. He got a chance to prove himself capable of more midway through the season thanks to injuries. And the in-season acquisition of Foster also proved crucial, Washington had Keenan Robinson and Perry Riley at the inside positions

but inexperienced backups capable of contributing in certain situations.,Last year, training camp featured a competition between Foster and Riley for the spot next to Compton. Foster wound up winning, and Riley got cut. Martrell Spaight and Su’a Cravens served as young, athletic

But things are downright crowded on the inside this year. There are the same amount of bodies, Foster and Brown, but the legitimacy of the options make the competition fiercer. Through three practices (Saturday was the first session where players wore pads), and we’ve seen Compton and Brown manning the middle, and other times, we’ve already seen Compton and Foster man their usual spots, and Foster and Spaight.

[Redskins players open up about ‘depression’ that comes with time on injured reserve]

but saw action in 14 games last season while briefly spelling Compton or Foster.,Compton, Foster and Brown, who made the Pro Bowl with Buffalo last season and signed a one-year deal with Washington, all served as full-time starters last year. Spaight has one start

“We’ve brought in some different guys that fit into our room and fit well under [inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti],” Compton said. “He does a great job and we’ve got a great group. We can do a lot of mixing and matching, so I’m really excited about our group.”

Compton and his fellow linebackers admit they don’t know how this thing will play out. There have been times where the Redskins emerge from offseason practices with their starters all but locked in at every spot. But that’s not the case this year. Coaches are doing so much mixing and matching to get an idea of how guys play together, and which combination produces the best, that the picture remains murky.

“I’m not really sure how we all fit just because we haven’t really went through the preseason yet,” Compton said. “I’m not sure what their ideas are, but you can just tell they’re going to want to do some different things.”

[Three takeaways from Day 3 at Redskins training camp]

It’s possible that Washington could wind up starting two guys – say Compton and Foster – and then sub Brown in for Foster on nickel packages because Foster seems stronger against the run and Brown against the pass.

because he’s a better coverage option than some of Washington’s outside linebackers., Chris Carter’s versatility also could come into play, but in a different way. He served primarily as a special teams ace during stints with Pittsburgh,Another free agent inside linebacker addition, Cincinnati and Baltimore. But he also possesses great athleticism, and has already joined Compton and Brown on pass-heavy situations

the days of every-down defensive starters are over, pass-heavy packages that feature dangerous pass-catching backs, distance and situation. The more options the Redskins have, even at inside linebacker. Defenses have so many different sub-packages that enable them to plug in various players based on down,Womens Will Fuller V Jersey, the better they’ll be able to thwart attacks they face,Because of the sophistication of NFL offenses, whether they’re run-heavy packages,Authentic T.Y. Hilton Jersey, or multiple tight ends.

And then there’s also insurance against injury.

” Carter said. “In the NFL,Authentic Blake Bortles Jersey, third group. It’s a lot like the NBA,“It helps because it gives you longevity throughout the year and ensures there’s no drop-off when you have to rotate, there’s so many high-powered dudes out there,Authentic Vontae Davis Jersey, so when you rotate guys, you don’t want a drop-off. So, you want to have strong groups: first group, second group, the teams that have that depth are tough.”

turnover in offseason was a good thing],[For Redskins

who has displayed growth after a year on the practice squad., on the outside, plentiful options should help ensure Washington’s pass rush remains relentless. Kerrigan is locked in as the starter at left outside linebacker. Preston Smith would like to hang onto his job on the other side,Meanwhile, but he has Junior Galette breathing down his neck, and Ryan Anderson is nipping at their heels as well. Trent Murphy will miss the first four games while serving a suspension for violating the league policy for performance enhancing drugs. But he remains a part of the equation. And there’s also Lynden Trail

which is currently Anderson.,Whether it’s Kerrigan and Smith, or Kerrigan and Galette, who has looked good while attempting to play for the first time in two years after back-to-back Achilles’ tendon tears, the third guy is going to play quite a bit. So will the fourth

Anderson has also relieved Kerrigan some., opposite Kerrigan, and on the left,Coach Jay Gruden said he wants to see Smith move around more and create more mismatches. “Special teams will be a big role also — who performs the best on that,” Gruden said when asked about the challenge of deciding the winners of some roster-spot battles. “If it’s close, the better special teams player will probably win out.”
